This Valentine’s Day, Fall in Love with Your Skin
Your Valentine this year? Your skin.
Breakouts, stress, late nights, over-indulgence: your skin has been with you throughout it all. Now is the best time to start taking care of your skin the way it deserves. At Rescue Spa, we are dedicated to educating you on skincare that is simple and backed by years of research and first hand experience. These products are great additions to your routine to help you glow up this winter.
What are Gen-Z's most common skincare mistakes?
In the age of viral skincare and an ever-increasing beauty landscape, it is easy to become confused by all the conflicting information. Overall, the most common skincare mistakes are:
Over-Exfoliation:
If you are pairing a scrub, with a chemical peel, with an exfoliating mask your skin barrier is most likely struggling. Over-exfoliation can lead to dry, red and inflamed skin and make concerns like acne worse
Chasing Trends:
Instead of Sticking to What Works: Skincare innovation is an amazing thing, but your skin is not designed to withstand a new routine every other week. Like diet and exercise, sticking to a core set of tried and true techniques will often lead to the best results
Using Multiple Actives at Once:
Retinol, Vitamin C, azaleic acid, niacinamide, glycolic- the list goes on. Too much of a good thing can actively damage your skin and prevent you from reaching your complexion goals. A streamlined routine is the best bet.
So Where Should You Begin?
It can be overwhelming when starting a new skincare routine. So many options, so many ads and differing opinions! However, if you are starting from scratch, the best place to start is with the basics: cleanser, toner and moisturizer. These are the foundations that you can build upon later. But why?
- Cleansers are mandatory to ensure that excess oil, makeup and daily grime are removed from your face. There are cleansers for every skin type and concern. Whether you prefer something super gentle and hydrating, or if you prefer something more refining, it's important to match with a quality, daily cleanser.
- Toner is often skipped, but you are doing yourself a disservice by doing so. Cleansers help to remove dead skin cells, clarify the pores, prevent congestion and balance the pH. This function is integral to a happy and healthy skin barrier.
- Finally, moisturizer (and yes, even if you are oily, you need one!) Moisturizers nourish and protect the skin barrier. If you are dry, rich emollient creams are best since dry skin's don't have the ability to produce enough natural sebum. Oily skin types benefit from lightweight creams or emulsions. When oily skin isn't properly hydrated, it can trigger the skin to produce excess oil, often leading to breakouts.
Once you have these three staples in your routine, give them 4-6 weeks to work their magic on your complexion. After that, you can start to slowly introduce actives that target your concerns, like serums and masks.
