Bergamot is the backbone of the family, a complex floral citrus grown in Calabria that sits underneath almost every classic cologne. Around it sit lemon and grapefruit for clean bitterness, neroli for a honeyed and slightly green lift, yuzu for a tart floral edge, and mandarin for sweetness. Because citrus molecules are small and evaporate quickly, most citrus scents last 30 to 60 minutes on skin before the heart of the fragrance takes over. This is why they are almost always paired with musk, wood, or vetiver to hold them in place.
