Collection: Amber Fragrances

Amber fragrances are warm, resinous, and faintly smoky, and amber is an accord built by the perfumer rather than a single ingredient.

There is no amber plant and no amber oil. The accord is constructed from labdanum, a sticky resin from the cistus shrub, alongside benzoin, vanilla, musk, and usually spice, and it has nothing to do with the fossilized stone of the same name. This family was known as oriental for most of the twentieth century, a term coined to evoke the spice and incense routes. The industry now favors amber and warm spicy instead, and both names remain in use while the change works through.

Key notes in Amber fragrance

  • Labdanum
  • Benzoin
  • Vanilla
  • Myrrh
  • Tonka
  • Cinnamon

Amber sits in the base and is among the most tenacious material groups in perfumery, often lasting a full day and remaining on scarves and coats afterwards. It suits cold weather and evening wear, and one or two sprays is usually enough.
