Collection: Fougère Fragrances

Fougère fragrances are built on lavender, coumarin, and oakmoss, and the accord was invented rather than found, since the fern it is named after has almost no smell at all.

The 1882 original combined lavender for freshness, bergamot for lift, coumarin from tonka bean for a warm hay and vanilla sweetness, and oakmoss for earthy fixing. Coumarin was the first synthetic aromatic material used commercially in perfumery, which makes fougère the point at which modern perfumery begins. The structure mapped so neatly onto soap, aftershave, and the barbershop that it has defined masculine fragrance ever since, and a great many classic colognes are fougères whether or not they say so.
