Leather Fragrances

Leather fragrances recreate the smell of hide entirely through smoke and chemistry, because no leather essential oil exists.

Perfumers reach for birch tar, produced by the dry distillation of birch bark, which carries an antiseptic smoke and reads immediately as old leather and shoe polish. Labdanum contributes a dry, resinous leather quality. Quinolines are synthetic materials with a metallic and medicinal character, first used in fine fragrance in 1924. Castoreum, once taken from beavers and now made synthetically, adds a tarry sweetness. The range runs from soft suede through sharp Russian leather to something closer to tarred rope, and leather almost always appears alongside smoke, wood, and tobacco.
